Anyone who has been to China’s major cities would know what I am talking about: the bombarding beat box, the looping and brainwashing Phoenix Legend songs, the unified repeating steps, the proud smiles on the dancing aunties’ face, the opportunistic mid-aged men and the disgruntled everybody else. Yes, it is the obnoxious plaza dance by passionate Chinese aunties. Not long after the sunset, armies of aunties will spontaneous exit their houses and march to a certain plaza to begin their daily routine dance. Be it inside resident communities, public parks, or in front of shopping malls, as long as there is a big enough empty space, and most importantly public, they would waltz their way in and take over.
Recently the dancing aunties have claimed a new territory, Hangzhou Railway Station.
Totaling 140,000 m² area, Hangzhou Railway Station has the size of almost 20 soccer fields together, which makes it one of the biggest train stations in Asia, which also makes it a perfect dance floor for the aunties.
In the past few nights, almost 1000 people come to dance at the station plaza. Acknowledging the fact that there is no way to stop them, the authority made a judgment call and purchased thousands-meter long isolation belt to set aside an area in the station plaza specifically for dance, hoping to satisfy both the passengers’ travel needs as well as the aunties’ exercising/socializing needs.
Supposedly the dancers are not allowed to dance out of the isolated area, but we are skeptical that the thousands-meter long belts can contain aunties’ ambition for very long.
