The environmental protection department speculated that this may be due to river sand brought from upstream during flood season.
Yesterday afternoon, Yuzhong District and Banan District Environmental Protection Bureau staff told reporters that the river in Chongqing city district area is indeed redder than usual, however after investigation, there were no illegal sewage dumping found around the coastal area. So the initially speculation of the cause was due to river sand brought from upstream during flood season. The specific cause is still under investigation.

“Laura Croft” – seriously? Why anyone publish a piece about their river turning red? Really? Think about it. China has the largest, mostly unregulated industrial revolution known to mankind and are notorious for heavily polluted lakes, rivers, etc. Why would this be BS? Obviously some people think its a sign of the end of times, but clearly its pollution. China is very careful about the news that leaves its country but something of this magnitude where millions of people could snap a photo, made it out.
