Casting for the highly anticipated film Mao Zedong has not yet been finalized, but Weibo users seem to know who they want playing Mao. Rumors spread on Weibo yesterday that Jiang Wen was chosen, and one a Chinese film critic challenged his followers to produce Photoshops of what Jiang would look like playing Mao.

Beijing film critic Tan Fei retweeted a weibo about the possibility of Jiang playing Mao along with the message “Who can make a PS [Photoshop] picture?”

User CindyBear8888 finished the job in one hour and her production has become very popular, having been retweeted by Tan Fei along with 1,359 other people.

CindyBear8888 created an image of Mao with Jiang’s face and bear smoking a cigarette and said, “Han Sanping intends to film Mao Zedong, he invited Jiang Wen to play Mao, Tan Fei asked who can Photoshop this. I tried to make the following picture, but the technology is poor. Everyone feels Jiang Wen should play Mao Zedong. How does it feel?”

Jiang would seem a fitting choice. According to his Chinese-language Wikipedia page:

Jiang said he admired Mao Zedong. Mao Zedong was his idol as a youth. Once in his house, all of his book were related to Mao: Mao Zedong’s Selected Works, some books about Mao, and Mao’s favorite book, Rong Jiang Essay.

But according to an article published at iFeng news’ website, the netizens might be jumping the gun a little too quickly.

Yesterday, someone on a micro-blog said. “Jiang Wen will be in the film Mao Zedong, preforming as Mao Zedong.” After, a reporter called the film company’s publicity director. … The marketing director and the news spokesman of China Film Group both confirmed that China Film Group hasn’t announced any news.

Jiang is married to the beautiful actress Zhou Yun. No word on whether his dating habits are anything like Mao’s.

  1. They should hire an Ape to play that mass murderer Mao Zedong! He killed billions and these Chinks worship him? No wonder Asians are so stupid.

Don’t worry, the US missles in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Guam will eventually bomb the shit out of those China when the time is right.

Then the rightful owners of Asia can step in again: US, Germany, France, Portugal, and England, and the Dutch.

  2. Yet another propaganda film to keep the masses enthralled with the party.

Few outside of China, and not weened on Chi commie propaganda would admire Mao. Since this film will not be objective or balanced as it has the approval and connivance of the CPC, it only makes China look bad in the eyes of the rest of the world.

The good news would be if the party has to herd the faithful into theaters ,under threat of losing their government contracts, or pay checks as they were forced to do with the last patriotic movie about the party.

    1. Totally agree. Those chinks suck at propaganda though, which is why their “hollywood” sector will FAIL. I’m not too worried about this film. If good people like you and me keep preaching FREEDOM & DEMOCRACY those Chinks will come to their senses.

      1. If preaching freedom and democracy involves being a repulsive douchebag then count me in! Herp derp.

  3. I am not banned.

  6. Alright guys,

I really enjoy Chinahush and Chinasmack because they offer an interesting glimpse into the China that has been censored to the rest of the world. More importantly, it has given a voice to the voiceless and shined a bright light into the face of injustice.

Regrettably, most of the comments I read are negative and childish. What happens in China affects the lives of people everywhere in the world, whether you’d like to believe that or not. This is true for every country. Some of the racist comments are just downright embarrassing, and serves as a very poor representation of the online community. Sadly, it’s also cowardly because everyone is protected by a veil of secrecy.

This movie is definitely a propaganda piece for Mao Zedong. Then again, seeing how China has developed under this Capitalist system, is it such a terrible thing to take a break and remember Mao?

    1. The key word here is contrition. If this was a regime that had come clean and been contrite about all the crimes committed by the CPC and Mao then yes it would not be a terrible thing to take a break and remember the old serial killer and his crimes against the Chinese people.

However this is not a contrite government interested in truth and reconciliation. Rather this is a regime full of hubris, beating its collective chest and determined to hide or side step it’s criminal past as it throws Nobel Prize winners into jail and people disappear in the night and fog.

The only reason more people are not condemning China is it is offering economic growth, but not on the model Mao wanted and killed millions to attempt to achieve.

      1. I have to congratulate you. Finally a comment that has something to do with the article and doesnt curse.
        Thank you.
