12 years of reading of another woman’s love letter wakes her husband up from coma

February 8th, 2010 by Annie Lee | Posted in News | 7 Comments »

20100208-coma01

From Sina:

Liu Hong, a 40-year-old woman in Minquan, Shangqiu City, woke up her husband from a 12-year coma by repeatedly reading her husband’s love letter from his period of puppy love for the entirety of the 12 long years when he was in a coma.

Some 13 years ago, a car accident turned Huang Jianjun, Liu Hong’s husband into vegetable patient. Liu stumbled upon Huang’s well-kept secret of a love letter as she turned their house upside down trying to find anything valuable to pay for Huang’s expensive treatment. Though heartbroken, and knowing that Huang had kept his true love buried, Liu chose to keep reading him the letter after she found out Huang’s always had a subtle reaction to the letter. Throughout the 12 years, Liu has read the letter thousands of times as her husband’s consciousness is restored bit by bit.

Get engaged in a bed of cash in China

January 23rd, 2010 by Key | Posted in Life Style | 30 Comments »

I saw these pictures on the Ifeng BBS. In Shaoxin Qiaohe, a couple got engaged and the future groom took out 988,888 RMB (150,000 USD) engagement money for the bride’s family, a 200,000 RMB (30,000 USD) engagement ring and a 100,000 RMB (15,000 USD) golden necklace.

20100123-marriage-01

This is really nothing rare or new in China, and there are certainly way more extravagant engagements or weddings in China, but it is still pretty impressive among the common folks in China or else it would not have ended up on the BBS.  People say marriage is a business, it is especially true in China, at least it is always more typical and elaborate.

Legless teacher, I am proud of you

December 24th, 2009 by Key | Posted in Life Style | 11 Comments »

20091224-teacher-01

From MOP:

Life is a process, a process from birth to death. Everyone has their own attitude towards life. While some people are enjoying their healthy bodies and taking them for granted, some other people are living a difficult life because of their physical disabilities. In Xiaoyangba community Yichang town, Hubei Province, there is a “teacher” with severe physical disabilities. A childhood medical malpractice injured his sciatic nerve, so he forever could not stand up.

An elderly woman who collects scraps returns lost 7000 RMB to police

December 22nd, 2009 by CC | Posted in Life Style, Opinion | 11 Comments »

I was feeling pretty disappointed with humanity after the results at Copenhagen, but then I read this story and felt a bit uplifted. If everyone was this selfless and took only what they needed, I imagine a different result at Copenhagen would have been possible. In less than one day, this story has generated 1200 comments on Mop.

The struggle of the sexless class

20091202-dwelling-narrowness-01

"Dwelling Narrowness" (蜗居) (A Romance of House) was first a novel by Liu Liu until it was made into a television series in 2008. The television series depicts a story of two sisters who want to live at ease in the city but are confronted with a variety of issues, mainly ridiculous housing prices. My Chinese friends always tell me that most Chinese people save their money primarily for three reasons: to buy a house, to pay for their children’s education, to pay for retirement. If a Chinese person can guarantee that they have these three things under control, they generally do not worry about living "the good life." However, the most important pursuit – buying a house – is becoming incredibly difficult even for people who are considered to be in the middle-class, especially in large cities. The television series "Dwelling Narrowness" has become a hot topic among the Chinese population, mainly because it raises the issue of the outrageously overpriced housing market in China, but also because it brings up issues of sexual infidelity, the difficulty of non-city dwellers to move into the city, and issues of social class. The following essay looks at "Dwelling Narrowness" and the issue it raises of "sexless classes" and how it relates to power and wealth.

[EASTDAY] November 7, 2009, 5 am in the morning, a 20-year-old girl gave birth to a brown-skinned mixed-race baby in the People’s Liberation Army 411 hospital in Shanghai. It is reported that this girl got pregnant and gave birth to the mixed-race baby due to her lack of judgment while making friends. With no parental care, the girl was not able to induce labor. The hospital lent her a helping hand to help her pull through the difficult time however the girl’s parents heartlessly ignored everything.

October 9th, 2009 by Key | Posted in Life Style | 9 Comments »

20091008-regimental-05

[Netease] Scene 1: October 6th 11:30 am (day six of the National Holiday), in the crowded tourist attraction – Mogao Caves when a middle age lady was touching the thousand-year-old Western Xia Dynasty cave painting with her hands, she was stopped by the 19-year-old commentator. The old lady was furious and left. But she came back almost immediately followed by two huge guys, walking straight towards the brave commentator who told her to “not touching the cave painting”. Two slaps in the face, the sound of slapping soaring through the cave along with the disgusting vulgar language. The cave was dead silent. Everyone was shocked by what just went on in front of their eyes. At that moment the 19-year-old little girl who was insulted was choking with tears. The old woman then stormed out.

Hello! Comrade! Gay China

August 21st, 2009 by Key | Posted in Entertainment, Life Style, News | 4 Comments »

20090820-gay-30

Hong Huang’s (洪晃) fashion magazine “ILOOK” shot another “edge ball”! (An activity that is ambiguous in its legal status) She invited China’s best designer Xander Zhou (周翔宇) as the guest editor and China’s cutting-edge photographer Trunk Xu (许闯), visually putting Chinese gays into her magazine. Total of 160 pages, directly presented Chinese gays’ life style. Guest editor Xander Zhou is on the cover page with the title “中国真高兴-Gay China”. (a pun of popular book “China is Unhappy“)

This article from Netease has the title “Hello Comrade”. The word “Comrade” () in Chinese is another term used to describe homosexual. If you divide the two characters, the first character means “same” the second character means “will”, hence the slang.

China Cracks Down on Internet “Losers”

August 10th, 2009 by Key | Posted in Life Style, News | 8 Comments »

Today I learned a new Chinese slang, 庐舍: (Pinyin: Lu She). The original meaning is “farmhouse”. When used as slang it is a phonetic translation of the English word “Loser”. Internet definition: Netizens who are over-indulged in the internet community on chat, animation, games and making friends etc. activities, without ambition and just muddling along. This group of people are so called “Loser Group” or “Loser Clan” (“庐舍族”). This forum post explains with a nice piece of “anti-loser” music video propaganda.

The Two Naked Girls on The Balcony

August 5th, 2009 by Nancy | Posted in Life Style | 19 Comments »

When I first saw this hot post on the Chinese forum, I thought chinaSMACK probably will translate this, indeed Fauna did posted this story yesterday.  But my good friend Nancy already also translated the story from Tianya BBS.  Here is our version.

20090805-balcony-girl-01

Around noon, July 30, 2009, two 10-year-old looking girls were spotted playing around naked on a residential building’s balcony. The building has 8 stories, and the two girls reside on the top floor. The writer took a quick glance at the balcony and noted it is filled with recycled paper, plastic, cans and other disposed items. The environment for the girls doesn’t look quite satisfying.

Migrant Worker Eating next to a Naked Woman is Art

July 24th, 2009 by Key | Posted in Life Style, Opinion | 8 Comments »

Netizen 落雪是花 posted this in ifeng BBS:

20090723-art-naked-01

Recently, there have been several so-called artists engaging in “performing art”. They hired a dozen migrant workers to eat next to a naked woman. Its name was “fantasy performance art”. What is “performing art”? I really do not understand, but I laugh at the idea of letting a group of men eat around naked woman and call it art.
