(From ctdsw) To protect his contracted property from being demolished by force, 56 years old peasant Yang Youde builds a blockhouse on his farming land and successfully scares the demolition team away twice using fire-tubes. Yang says he is not nail-household who struggles for higher compensation, he is just fighting to justify what he entitled to by laws.

Villagers defend their home against demolition squad’s fire extinguishers

Nail household; nail house; stubborn nail: (钉子户) A person or household that refuses to relocate due to compensation disagreements when the land is requisitioned for new construction.

Conflicts between the demolition squad and the nail household being forcefully relocated often happen in China. Nemours huge tragic incidents have occurred in the recent past. Chinese residents often took extreme measures in protecting their properties, like throwing home-made fire bombs at the demolition squad. But the most common strategy is just holding their ground and threatens to suicide, to live and die with the house. Shockingly, there were at least 2 incidents in the past year, the residents actually killed themselves, burned themselves alive in front of the government demolition squad to protest the unfair compensation and land requisition and to show their will of “live or die with their homes”. Of course many other casualties like this also can happen…

69-year-old granny buried alive, family members get 5 homes plus 600,000 as compensation

Wang Cuiyun, a 69-year-old granny’s last photo, a few hours later, she was buried alive in the ditch. Behind her was a 3-stories building in which live her and 17 family members, which was why granny opened her arms trying to stop the excavator with her own body. She somehow went into the ditch, while operator on the excavator went on shoveling and buried her with a load of earth.

The tragedy happened in Maodian Village, Huangpi District, Wuhan City on March 3rd. Though granny’s family was the last nail household (钉子户) in the requisitioned area, they gave up after a year of resisting and prepared to sign the demolition agreement just a day before the tragedy.

The case of Nail household is a common occurrence in China, however this incident is by far the most escalated conflict between residents and the government demolition team. Ms. Fan attempted to defend her house from the demolition squad by throwing home-made fire bombs…
