He wrote:

Up to now, this post was already reposted 8,014 times, and half of the posts in the “2010 Bar” were all discussions about the motive of “X from the future”, some gave explanations debunking him, but more people praised and supported him.

Up to July 9 2010, 2:41am, this post generated 245,267 comments, up to 20,000 clicks per second at one point. People called it the God Post. Because of the public attention of the World Cup, this post will likely become the most clicked post in the history of all forum posts. July 8, 2010 around noon, the post was growing in the rate of 5 pages per second (with comments) due to the crazy number of the comments flooded in, indeed a magical post. Up till now, Brother Future’s predictions are all correct, the final is going to be between the Netherllands and Spain. While we are still on the subject of Yushu earthquake, I found an interesting post about Michael Wong’s (a Malaysian Chinese singer and composer) Renren page was under Chinese fenqing’s attack because of one of his Renren status update on China’s national mourning day for Yushu earthquake (yesterday).

This kind of Chinese fenqing attack incidents are not uncommon on the internet.  They are usually very random and so are the victims, they can be from an ordinary citizen to A-list celebrities: Chinese National Flag Bikini Fashion Show was said to be disrespectful of the national flag; Zhang Ziyi was accused of disgracing China in her sexual role in an American film;  Jackie Chan was hated for his comments about “Chinese people need to be controlled”…  Compare to above this incident is even pettier, but I still feel that it is important to talk about it here especially I have seen many similar situations through comments on my blog as well.

Fenqing (愤青) which is itself an abbreviation for Fennu Qingnian (愤怒青年), means literally “angry youth”. It mainly refers to youth who display a high level of Chinese nationalism. This term first appeared in Hong Kong in the 1970s, referring to those young people who were not satisfied with Chinese society and sought reform. It has now evolved into a term used predominantly in Internet slang. Whether fenqing is derogatory or not usually depends on the person. Critics describe them with negative terms including “粪青” (“shit-youth” or “idiotic youth”, same pronunciation), which can be changed further to “fenfen” (粪粪) as a derogatory nickname.

On April 11, around 8 pm, one Chinese netizen discovered Sora Aoi’s twitter account, and quickly spread the news. Some other well-known Japanese AV stars’ twitter accounts were also discovered. This netizen wrote on his Sina micro-blog, “Do you want to be face to face with Sora Aoi? Then go on Twitter, can’t get on twitter? Then send email to mytwitterclient@gmail.com, it has auto reply.”

prior to her account being discovered, she only had a few hundred followers and most of them are from Japan. Once “discovered” the number of her followers reached tens of thousands just in one day.

Yesterday, a well-known columnist in the Chinese Internet community Hecaitou (和菜头) updated his Sina micro-blog with a sentence in Japanese: “The night of Sora Aoi breaks ten thousand mark, Hecaitou is one of Sora Aoi’s ten thousand fans.” AV stars like Sora Aoi are very popular amongst the Chinese adolescents and even seen as “the great sexual enlightenment.” Just like what Hecaitou said “Aoi teacher, thank you for many years of hard work, we should present certificates of appreciation to her.” He said “so many years, finally get to meet AV stars on twitter, for the first time I feel the internet is real.”

Many netizens believe that the reason Sora Aoi’s twitter was madly worshipped is because this is the first large scale of direct dialogue on twitter with a real (famous) person from a different country.

This internet song is modified from the original song “Zhong Guo Hua” (中国话: Chinese language) by S.H.E. It uses the same music with modified lyrics. Netizens called it the KUSO version of the S.H.E song.

More shockingly, Peking University entrance examination (Gaokao) held on January 16, 2010 had questions on this KUSO version of the song “The whole world is laughing at China being stupid”, asking students to find the rhymes in the lyrics and also use them in sentences. Almost all the test takers were all stumped by the questions. Once the topic was announced, it immediately aroused public concerns; people were more and less shocked how “unimaginably creative” Peking University’s exam questions can be.

Chongqing resident Zhao Peng (not his real name) never would have thought 7 years have passed but similar incident happened again; this time it happened to him, his cell phone had a clip of Japanese adult video which caused him being arrested.

Zhao Peng tells his story on Sohu:

On December 29, 2009, 9 am in the morning at Shaoxing train station, Zhejiang province, I just got off the train and was stopped by couple of policemen. They asked to see my identification and the train ticket. (All women passed by without being stopped) One policeman asked me to take out everything I have on me for inspection. I took out everything. He started to look at my cell phone. First he looked through my phone book then he looked through all the media files on the phone. Woo! There was Japanese adult video! He watched for a little while then told me that I was not going to leave. And he told me to follow him to the security office. When we got to the office, he showed me a book with this rule: person who is producing, selling and transporting pornography (CD, DVD) disks, in serious cases, is subject to be detained for 15 days and a fine of 3000 yuan; in minor cases is to be detained for 5 days and with a fine of 500 yuan. And there was another rule included videos. He said, “What do you think we should do? We can detain you.” I said, “Having AV in cell phone is not just me, 90% of men’s cell phones all have them, why don’t you inspect them? Why me?” He answered “It would have been ok if you were not inspected. Now it’s your bad luck that you were. You tell me what we should do! How about let’s detain you for 5 days first? It’s ok, it will be fast!” I did not know what to do and said “Now I am here, you are the boss, whatever you say I don’t dare to say no.” He said “then let’s follow what it says on the book.” I said, “Big brother, please let it go, I will take you out drinking tomorrow.” He said, “Don’t try to kiss up, there are people taking me out drinking everyday.” I then took out 200 yuan and put it on the table and said “That’s all I have.” He looked at it and said “200 is not even enough for the fine, just stay in jail for couple days!” After a while… “But you behaved well, so I will give you a chance. Write a self-criticism / promise note and plus that 200 yuan.” Then I wrote some words on some paper and he told me to get out. I feel deeply regret about this experience. Policemen are looking for money for the new years!

Zhao Peng told the reporter that the policemen did not give him any ticket. And his cell phone was not turned on, the policemen switched on his phone without his permission.

In the afternoon of January 6, the reporter and Zhao Peng called Shaoxing, Zhejiang Railway station police and asked about this incident. An anonymous staff confirmed the incident, he said, recently in order to ensure the railway safety; the railway station police are conducting random inspections on the passengers. It was not only targeting foreigners (non-locals). He also said “Carrying pornographic video allegedly propagates pornographic material, the circumstances are very serious.” As for the police issued the fine without a receipt, “We are not the same as other police, we issue fines but do not require to keep a receipt.”

This was just in today, according to Netease, after Zhao Peng’s post got much attention from the media. Zhejiang Shaoxing Railway police station immediately investigated the matter.  And today (January 9, 2009) Zhejiang Shaoxing Railway police station sent representative flying to Chongqing and apologized to Zhao Peng.

#1 Don’t Need More Money (不差钱 – Implying for "We can have this")

During the Spring Festival Gala, hosted by China Central Television (CCTV), two famous comedians Zhao, Ben-Shan (赵本山), and Bi, Fu-Jian (毕福剑), along with Zhao’s apprentices Xiao Shen-Yang (小沈阳） and Maomao （毛毛）put up a classic comedy script "Don’t Need More Money" (不差钱). Although both Mr. Zhao and Mr. Bi are very well known comedians in China to multiple generations, the person who truly made this script famous and the term "Don’t need more money" popular was Mr. Zhao’s apprentice, Xiao Shen-Yang, who showed up with a classic Scottish skirt. Furthermore, connecting with the fact that Mr. Zhao broke his tradition of performing the show with his apprentices instead of his traditional partners (other known comedians in China) and the content of the show, the term "Don’t need more money" indicated an underlying meaning of "We can have this" suggesting the fact that nothing needs to stay in its traditional way as long as people are willing to make and accept the change. As such, the term "Don’t need more money" became the #1 popular netizen slang for 2009.

#2 Jia Junpeng, Your Mom Told You To Go Home for Dinner! (贾君鹏，你妈叫你回家吃饭)

The reason this particular phrase became popular among netizens was due to a post called " Jia, Jun Peng, Your Mom Told You To Go Home for Dinner!" post from a forum. After the post was initially posted, it was viewed and replied for tens of thousands times within the first few hours after the initial post. Additionally, the post only had "rt" ("Ru-Ti" – 如题, or "same as the title") in its content, and the person who initiated the post did not respond to any of the questions raised by fellow netizens, such as "What is the purpose of the post?", "Who is Jia Jun Peng?". Per further review, the post utilized daily conversation to raise an alarm to youngsters today, who are addicted to or spends majority of their spare times over internet casual games, which made it easy to accept and provided an instant connection to everyone who has had similar experiences or knows someone in similar situation. In fact, it is not important of who "Jia Jun Peng" really is, because there is at least one "Jia Jun Peng" in each and everyone of our lives, because often, our families continues to hope for more family time together and we all have few true friends, who will always stand by us to remind us things we’ve neglected.

#3 Hide and Seek (躲猫猫) (Eluding the cat)

Similar to the term "Push Up" back in 2008, the term "Hide and Seek" in 2009 was originated from a criminal case during the year. After Li, Qiao-Ming (李乔明), 24 years old, got arrested for theft on January 30, 2009, he was sent to the hospital for severe injury on February 8, 2009 and died 4 days later due to severe head trauma. Answer provided by the police was that Li was injured during the "Hide and seek" game with his in-mates, such that, he was beaten by his inmates and his head hit the concrete wall. At the same time, another media source stated police’s investigation indicated Li was blind-folded during the game, which led to the tragedy. The new source received immediate attention from netizens and raise various discussions regarding the danger of the game, which also implied to inadequate job responsibilities in regards to the inmate safety performed by the police department.

Further more, there are more terms in addition to "Hide and Seek", such as "Taking a Shower", "Make a Dream", and "Take a Nap", that have similar underlying meanings and all indicating tragedies took place in the jail and relating to death of one or more inmates.

#4 Who Do You Represent? (你是哪个单位的？)

Some netizens said, during October 2009, it was not the red leaves that caught people’s attention and became more popular, but the phrase "Who do you represent". During the Chinese National Games of 2009, multiple incidents took place and shocked people who pay close attention to the competitions. During one of the incidents, Zhou, Ji Hong (周继红), Vice Chief-staff of National Swimming Management Center and National Diving Management Group, answered journalist’s question of whether the gold metals were pre-determined with "Who do you represent" rather than a clear answer. As such, the phrase soon became popular among netizens and continues to be applied by netizens over various circumstances to imply "I don’t want to answer you" throughout 2009.

#5 Anxious (心神不宁)

On June 18, 2009, both "National News" (新闻联播) and "Focused Discussion" (焦点访谈), two rather popular shows on CCTV, talked about Google China hosting various sexual ads on its website. Especially during "Focused Discussion", the journalist interviewed a college student named Gao, Ye (高也), who used the term "anxious" during the interview to describe his views over the Google ads in question. However, it was later noticed that the college student who got interviewed was also an intern at "Focused Discussion", which led to multiple criticisms of a famous talk show creating false interview to mislead its audiences. Starting from June 19, 2009, posts titled "Focused Discussion Lies" or along the same meaning were viewed and forwarded online rapidly. Also, Gao, Ye, the interviewee, also received undivided attention from netizens from questioning the truthfulness of his statements to perform detailed search and investigation of his private life (人肉搜索), which later exposed his blog, QQ, cell phone number, and his girl friend’s name and ID. As such, the term "anxious" became popular during 2009.

#6 The Lonely Group: Brother Is Not Eating Noodle, But Loneliness (寂寞党：哥吃的不是面，是寂寞)

The Lonely Group became popular overnight during 2009, which was originated from a non-main stream styled youngster posted a picture of himself eating noodle online with caption of "Brother is not eating noodle, but loneliness.". The picture is rather ironic and yet interesting. As such, the phrase of "Brother is not ____, but (do so out of) loneliness." For example, "Brother is not singing, but loneliness"; "brother is not giving an answer, but loneliness"; "Brother is not making a post on the forum, but loneliness"…etc. As the popularity of this phrase become more popular, it also formed the group "The Lonely Group". Starting from July 2009, almost all forums within China were flooded with this particular phrase and became the dominating response pattern for many forums. Additionally, people who frequently uses this particular phrase have also been categorized as "The Lonely Group" by the netizens. It is also a current pattern within the forum that many simple phrases will be used so frequently and applied to almost every incident to make it popular and at times spread like a wildfire. For example, sentences like "do not get obsessed with brother, brother is only a legend", "Jia Jun Peng, your mom told you to go home for dinner".

#7 Being "xx"ed (被XX, or got forced to)

"Being suicide-ed" is a term to describe murder cases with similar characteristics of suicide. The term is developed to describe and mock death cases that were concluded as suicide but with rather weak supporting evidence. Ever since the term "being suicide-ed" was developed, the pattern was again, being applied to many other situations such as "being employed", "being averaged", "being/forced to donate", "being missing", "being volunteered", "being to be happy" and etc, often it is a term of negativity and mockery.

#8 The Cup Set (杯具,Tragedy)

It is nearly impossible to determine the source of this term "The Cup Set" or tragedy. However, the most commonly used pattern is "Life is a cut set" (or "life is tragic). Netizens use the phrase "Life is a bowl of noodle soup, cup set is too small to hold it and regular bowls are too big, which will be a waste of space" to describe situations where they didn’t have a choice but to take the option in front of them. As the word "tragedy" has identical pronunciation as "the cup set" in Chinese, the term "the cup set" then become so popular that many netizens formed the "cup set group" (杯具党, bei-ju dang / tragedy group), some even further developed the term to describe other situations, such as "The washing set" (洗具, xi-ju / 喜剧, comedy), "the dining set" (餐具, can-ju / 惨剧, tragedy), "the tea set" (茶具, cha-ju / 差距, distance), to make the term more applicable to various circumstances.

#9 Can’t Go Into More Details (这事儿不能说得太细)

During one episode of "Focused Discussion" – "Questionable Access Fee", while facing the question of "how much does city TianJing have to pay back in debt for its freeway construction", government official in-charge, Liu, Bo (刘博), simply answered the question with "I can’t go into more details". The answer surely caused much questioning and raised many discussions among netizens. Again, the phrase is used to mock situations where transparency is required but yet non is provided. As such, netizens will follow their posts with "Can’t go into more details" or "Please be ware of the level of detail you’ve provided" to mock similar situations.

#10 xx Building (楼xx)

During 2009, the number of issues relating to quality of condo buildings has exceeded people’s expectation. For example, one awarded building in Shanghai, Ming-Hang District fell entirely backwards and because the "Crunchy building"; a 32-level community residential building in Nanjing City tilted severely and became the "Tilted Building"; the standard thickness for each floor level is approximately 12cm, however, one building in ZheJiang Province, Tong-Xiang City, only had 7.9cm and became the "Thin Building"; the bus station in Yan Tai city costed $40 million RMB to build, however, it is on the edge of collapsing after 5 years of use, which became the "Collapsing Building"…etc.

Given the rapidly increasing number of issues relating to residential or community used buildings, "XX building" became the new term for netizens to describe them.

Ever since the Internet has spread like wildfire in China, people have become famous through the Internet, sometimes unintentionally. In Chinese netizen-speak, this is known as being “red” (more of a reference to fire or vibrance than the usual Communist connotation) which can be translated as being “hot,” or maybe “the rage.” Now that 2009 is coming to an end (also the year where the number of Internet users in China has surpassed the US population), there are various tallies on who the “hottest” Internet celebrities are. It doesn’t seem there has been any sort of official vote yet, but there seems to be a general consensus among all the forums and websites who the “red” people are. I chose 11 that seem to appear in all the lists and show the variety. If you want to see the original Chinese sites, check out this and this.

The point of this post is not to necessarily be an official ranking, but to give you an idea of the grassroots nature of how Internet fame is manifest in China, the disproportionate emphasis placed on pretty girls, and the seemingly complete randomness of who becomes “red.”

1. The most handsome traffic policeman of Chongqing (重庆最帅交警): The host of a TV show called “Transportation for Everyone” has been deemed “the most handsome traffic policeman” by netizens based on his classic good looks, bright demeanor, and a winning smile.

2. Candied Haws Beauty (糖葫芦西施): 19-year old vendor of candied haws (see ChinaHush post here) at Tiaotong University in Xi’an. Her real name is Kang Xiaohan (康晓菡) but local male students gave her the name “Tanghulu Xishi” (Xishi is one of the Four Beauties of ancient China).

After October of this year, China media reported her entrepreneurial story, she quickly became famous on the internet and this incident also helped her business greatly.  Now candied Haws Beauty no longer  have to sell her candied haws on the street with her tricycles, she had opened up a shop and also registered her own trademarks – “Kang Xiaohan Tanghulu Xishi”.

3. Long-legged Meimei (长腿妹妹): Meimei (netizens will sometimes just use MM) is what Chinese call beautiful girls that have a touch of the “girl next-door” feel. Her real name is Kong Yansong (孔燕松) and her legs are 1.17 meters (3.84 feet) long. As one netizens says, “Her legs are just too much.”

And she has a twin sister named Kong Yaozu (孔瑶竹)  who is 1.78 meters tall.

4. Little Sister Linjia (林家小妹): Her real name is Lin Yi (林依). Twenty-year old singer and actress who became famous through her songs and “scary” (funny) movies on the Internet. Also known as the “the neighborhood’s little sister” using a phonetic play on the first character (邻家小妹). Her more popular series are “The Case of Meeting a Ghost”and “The Chapter on Talent.”One netizens says, “She is not only my sister, she is your sister, his sister, her sister, she is everyone’s little sister!”

5. The Xidan Girl (西单女孩): Her real name is Ren Liyue (任月丽), she was born in Hebei and due to her parents being sick since she was young, she was mostly raised by her grandmother. So that her family would be less economically burdened, she came to Beijing alone at the age of 16. A netizen who passed her in Xidan (a popular shopping district in Beijing) recorded her singing a song called “The Wings of an Angel” and uploaded it to the Internet, the video immediately became incredibly popular all over the web. Her singing is moving and heartfelt – some people also call her “The Angel in Xidan.”

6. The Yunnan Nude (云南裸体): Her real name is Peng Chunping (彭春平) and she is 21-years old. She likes to wear wide white-collar dresses or white t-shirts and hot pants. In 2008, she posted naked pictures of herself on the Internet in order to voice her grievances and to find her mother who had gone away to find work. Recently, she was again in the spotlight. A dwarf named Beibei had posted an advertisement seeking a marriage partner and she responded and agreed to marry him.

7. The coolest male student specialist in history (史上最牛专科男生): Real name Yang Rui (杨锐) He is an entrepreneur who makes “Singles T-shirts” for people who are single. They have already sold thousands of t-shirts and made over 400,000 RMB. He says, “Perhaps we will encounter difficulties, but you should express your personality when you are young, do what you want, the end is not important, what I care about is the process.”

8. Hibiscus II (芙蓉二代): Her real name is Xu Qingqing (徐情情) and was born in Wenzhou province. She is now attending college in Zhejiang. She posted pictures on the Internet revealing her outspoken personality and outrageous expressions. She claims that “I want to show the most beautiful part of myself to everyone.” Chinese netizens have varying reactions to her, some sarcastically call her “the representative of the new economy,” some admire her for her outspokenness, some say she is the typical example of what comes out of the Internet in this day and age, and some call for increased surveillance of the Internet in order to prevent people like her from “rising again.”

9. The Academic Cat of Peking University (北大学术校猫): A student from Peking University posted on the school’s forum a post entitled “A cat worth respecting from Peking University,” claiming that the cat would listen to class along with students.

10. The Shanghainese Ticket Vendor (上海售票妹妹): She sells bus tickets on bus line 934 in Shanghai. Her real name is Gujia Wen (顾佳雯), she has colorful nails, purple contacts, hair down to her shoulders. She, along with 27 other young ticket vendors in Shanghai, are used to display a youthful image of Shanghai for the World Expo.

11. The Pirate Copy of Cecilia Cheung (翻版张柏芝) Her real name is Gong Mi (贡米), she is currently a student at Beijing Film School, and she is multi-talented and beautiful. Upon entering a singing contest in Zhengzhou, she received a lot of attention because she looks like Zhang Bozhi (known as Cecilia Cheung in English), a famous actress and singer. However, due to illness, she later had to drop out of the competition.

Jang Nara is a very popular Korean singer and actress. She also sings in Chinese and is known there by her Chinese transliteration name (张娜拉 Zhang Nala).

Incident

Recent years, Korean stars often performed in China, calling it developing Chinese market, but in fact making serious money is the main reason. Recently, Korean star Jang Nara revealed in a well-known Korean talk show that whenever her production budge is tight, she will go perform in China.

This remark caused an immediate uproar. Netizens think such remark was clearly discriminating against Chinese market. “An insult of Chinese people, she thinks people in China can only see her fake smile!? Gone too far, never seen any Korean performer say things like that.”

Yesterday evening Jang Nara found out that things became more serious and quickly said that she was joking, and was blown out of context by the media. She said she is going to mainland for exchanges, and public services while performing.

Then this forum post by netizen (辽河鱼) with the title “Temporary Rape, the birth of new vocabulary” (“临时性强奸”，又一新名词诞生了) appeared on Netease. It was soon copied and reposed onto every BBS possible. According to Netease this post already had over 870,000 views, and 6,700 comments.

These years, the word “temporary” is very popular, this “temporary” and that “temporary”, “blossomed and bear fruits” in very department. Its effect specially made the leaders satisfy, these organizations used it over and over again with delight, it’s as sweet as the fine wine, became a shield to evade responsibilities.

According the crime facts Nanxun Criminal court determined the two rapists “temporarily committed the crime”. I am confused, what does it mean? Searched all over the internet, I still could not find the term basis and the origin of “temporary committing a crime”. “Temporary” means actions that are not official and in short-term. Can rape be differentiated by “unofficial” and short-termed? This “temporary committing the crime” should be a new vocabulary, filling up the gap of our country’s judicial system creatively, indeed gratifying.

I do not understand. A crime can be temporary, permanent and long-term? In this case the victim was unconscious, those two took turns to rape her, why isn’t it rape? Is it because the victim forgave them? How did they get victim’s forgiveness? I for one believe “money sealed lips”. If this sentence becomes a new example, then the next time when “temporary crime” happens again, should we give lenient punishment again? If so we can extend this to the entire country, so that the vast criminals all can “temporarily committee the crime”.

First they got the girl drunk, and then took her to a hotel and raped her. This was obviously a premeditated crime. What is “real time”? It is “real time” having sex. A “temporary crime” can be punished lightly? Then which crime is not “temporary”? They all should get the lenient sentences?

The crime is considered “temporary crime”, then the three year prison term I think should be the “temporary sentence”.

Police associate, is helping the police to enforce the law maybe can be called “temporarily” assisting the law enforcement. But when committed a crime, how come it became “temporarily” breaking the law?

“… with no prior planning, also turned themselves in willingly afterwards …” They are really model rapists, proved themselves to have the background of police associates. Victim did not report and did not pursue the crime, and they willingly turned themselves in. This kind of rapist is truly hard to find in this world. I think we should not give them a sentence. Instead we should promote this kind of model behavior of surrendering themselves to the police, better yet give them some bonus cash for encouragement. Even if we give them a sentence, it should be three years with a 2 years of probation period, that why we can show our humanity in our verdicts.

I thought of that guy who was convicted for the crime of rape because he climbed a tree and peeked at a woman.  Only if he was in the court of “temporary committing crime”, how could he have ever been guilty? Poor guy was born at the wrong place. It was not your fault.

Peeking at women is a crime, but two guys raping a woman was “temporarily committing the crime”. It is indeed awesome, hats off to the judge’s creativity.

I believe this “temporary committing crime” soon will become a popular internet term like “hide and seek”, “pushups”, “70 miles” etc. (all of these terms come from recent popular news [scandals, controversy] on the Chinese internet, I will find time to explain these in the future)

So according to this term “temporary”, next time there could be “temporary beating someone to death”, “temporary kicking someone to death”, “temporary ‘being suicide’ (another mocking term for covering murder with suicide)”, “temporary taking bribes”, “temporary drinking and driving”, “temporary robbery” and “temporary theft”, every crime can use “temporary” as an excuse to reduce the sentence. We can imagine a “temporary” era is coming.

An Internet phenomenon occurring in China is anybody can become famous or infamous overnight. And sometimes for no reason other than just being who they are. Ok, a lot of them were actually hyped up for for unknown reasons by people behind the scenes, usually for personal gains. Still, every now and then, ordinary people become the talk of the nation overnight.

Tanghulu Xi Shi (糖葫芦西施) is the latest popular figure on the Chinese internet (this is the first article I saw about her.) It all started with a young, beautiful and fashionable girl selling tanghulu by Xi’an Jiaotong University. Within less than a year, this girl named Kang Xiaohan (康晓菡) was quickly popularized around the University, local male students gave her the nick name “Tanghulu Xi Shi” (Candy Haw Beauty).

There was a three-wheeled cart parked by the west side of Xi’an Jiaotong University on a sidewalk. On the tricycle, there is a food display case, inside are different kinds of candied hawthorn. Next to the tricycle, a girl is dressed in a white T-shirt, carrying a fashionable bag, with large silver earrings jingling along with a sweet smile. “Four tanghulu please!” two male students requested. The young girl quickly took four candied haws out from the display case, wrapped them in rice paper, handed over to the boys. “12 yuan!” she would respond cheerfully The students paid her and continued to walk into campus.

Students stopped by the stand even if they had no intention of buying candied haws. Boys always stole an extra look when passing by. “These are 3 yuan each, those are 2 yuan each, which one do you want?” The girl’s business thrived that morning; she sold 20 candy haws in 10 minutes and many male students preferring to eat their candied haws right next to the cart.

The university’s BBS is just where Tanghulu Xishi’s fame started. Then it spread to every website in the nation. Her pictures even made to the front page of local newspapers. Tanghulu Xishi just got increasingly popular in the last few days. Numerous media outlets have went to her stand to interview her. Her pictures are sweeping across the Chinese Internet. Youku posted a video interview with her. In the video, Candy Haw Beauty is just another simple, honest migrant worker in the city who did not think too much about her future, and just enjoying her successful business of selling candied haws.

Recently Tanghulu Xi Shi’s picture was on the front page of a newspaper which prompted netizens all over the country to become obsessed with her, and attracted even more media attentions. After a few days of constant interviews from all kinds of media, Tanghulu Xishi, only 19 years old, could not take the media and fans’ extreme infatuation anymore and stopped her business to rest at home. After a day of searching, Youku was able to contact her and she finally agreed a video interview with Youku to talk about her mixed feelings.

What was the income of this “hype”? Huang said he made a “6 digits” reward, he believes that it is not very high. “In comparison, this incident has higher visibility even United States reported and commented.”

The name “Jia Junpeng” is based on Huang Lianghua named his friend’s child “Li Junpeng”. Because the last name “Li” was too common, to prevent having the same name as a real person, they changed the last name to “Jia”. “We consider that to be easy to remember, also ‘Jia’ (贾) has the same pronunciation as ‘fake’ (假) in Chinese. This gives a hint which the person is made up.”

As for the phrase “Your mom tells you to go home to eat”, he said “In fact it is an easy phrase, has no difficult text in it. This creation was inspired by the childhood memory. According Netease, the real Jia Junpeng  was discovered by the media in Nanjing, which proves this incident was not “hyped” by internet marketing company, but it is a middle school student.  The article did not give any more details on this.

At this point, there are many other theories, claimers claims to be responsible for this incident. Netizens are skeptical, internet marketing company who claims to be responsible could just be using this incident to hype up themselves.

Jia Junpeng became instantly famous because of a phrase on the internet. July 16 2009 someone wrote a post on Baidu WoW (World of War craft) forum with the title “Jia Junpeng, your mom tells you to go home to eat” Up to 9 pm the next day it already had 243,000 replies and 6 million clicks.

Jia Junpeng became instantly famous because of a phrase on the internet. July 16 2009 someone wrote a post on Baidu WoW (World of War craft) forum with the title “Jia Junpeng, your mom tells you to go home to eat” Up to 9 pm the next day it already had 243,000 replies and 6 million clicks.

The poster has the IP address of “222.94.255.*”. The content of the post only has 2 letters “rt” is the abbreviation for “see title” in Chinese. Who is Jia JunPeng? Why the post?

Nobody seems to have the definite answers for these questions. Netizens who replied to the post even changed their user names to be “Jia JunPeng’s aunt”, “Jia JunPeng’s grandpa”, “Jia JunPeng’s sister” etc. formed a huge Jia family. Photoshoped Kuso pictures of this topic were all over varies forums. For a no content post to become so popular over night, this is yet another unexplained china internet phenomenon. However experienced Warcraft players said there might be deeper meaning behind this. Warcraft veteran players said “Jia Junpeng” = World of Warcraft, “your mom” = Warcraft’s current host Netease. User IDs appeared in the thread “Jia Junpeng’s father”, “Jia Junpeng’s father’s lover” respectively are Blizzard and World of Warcraft’s former host nine cities. As for “Jia Junpeng’s seventh and eighth auntie” are other online games.

Currently Warcraft has stopped serving the country more than 40 days. Current host Netease claims suffering heavy losses due to competitor’s attack. Five million Chinese WoW players have been waiting and are angry. So “Jia Junpeng, your mom tells you to go home to eat” has been interpreted by the WoW players as “Netease hurry up and start the World of Warcraft service” Even it is a bit crazy, it does make some sense.
