August 9th, 2010 by Key | Posted in Life Style | 65 Comments »

20100808-subway-01

The original post title on MOP was “Direct report of each Shanghai subway lines, YP compilation”.  What is YP? YP is an abbreviation for 硬盘 (Ying Pan: means hard drive) This slang is originated from KDS (PChome.net) a Shanghai based (originally) computer forum, the user of the forum (Shanghainese) referred YP as all outsiders (外地人:waidiren) who supposedly are lower quality people than Shanghainese. The derivation was most popular hard drive brand being Western Digital, and WD is also the abbreviation for 外地 (Waidi) means outside or other places.

Foreigners’ Chinese Tattoos

August 6th, 2010 by Key | Posted in Life Style | 40 Comments »

20100805-tattoo-65

The title of this original post from Tianya was “Talk about some stupefied individual foreigners’ tattoos, not understanding Chinese is really frightening”.  Tattoos of Chinese characters can be really beautiful and artistic, some also can be meaningful and speak the words of wisdoms, however some of the samples we have here really make us wonder if the person or even the tattoo artist understood the meaning of these words.  If you don’t understand Chinese and ever were thinking about getting a tattoo of Chinese characters, the advice is to get a second opinion from your knowledgeable Chinese friend.

June 22nd, 2010 by Key | Posted in News | 27 Comments »

20100622-north-korea-football-02

Recently the Chinese websites and forums are filled with the talks of North Korea National football team are going to be sent to coal mine as punishment if they lose at the World Cup.  Is this true?  Netease talked about this “as a not verified news” on June 17 after North Korea’s 1-2 loss to Brazil.  Some sites claimed this news came from U. S. blogs and small websites. This article from IFeng talked about a “rumor” found on a Team Liquid forum posted by a Romanian:

“As I was turning in to see the second half of the Argentina vs S. Korea game, I heard the newscaster for TVR1( Romania’s national TV station) talking about four north Korean players gone missing from world cup.  It is believed that they have fled in order to avoid going back to North Korea.”

The article also stated that a former North Korea assistant coach said “If we lose, they will be punished, some players will be sent to work at a coal mine.”

Brother Blanket becomes popular on the Internet

June 17th, 2010 by Key | Posted in Life Style, News | 7 Comments »

20100616-brother-blanket-01

If you surf Chinese websites long enough you will probably notice how things or people become popular on the Chinese Internet can be a bit strange and unpredictable. This recent viral photo has just made “Brother Blanket” the latest Internet meme in China.

(From Netease) A graduating senior at Hunan Agricultural University unconventionally wrote these words “Brother is leaving” on his blanket and hang it on his dorm room balcony. The downstairs balcony then “replied” with “Ding upstairs”. (A pun to Chinese BBS forum: A forum post is called a building and each comment below is a story of the building. Ding means to support or to raise.) Thus netizens call him “Brother Blanket”. (Photo by 张骛)

June 15th, 2010 by Key | Posted in Life Style, News | 39 Comments »

From Netease:

Elegance and vulgarity has always been sworn enemies of each other in popular culture over the years. Guo Degang once said, drinking coffee is elegant and eating garlic is vulgar; nude photography is elegant and couple telling dirty jokes is vulgar… Now, in a scenic spot of Xinmi, Henan Province, elegance and vulgarity crashes again.

20100614-nude-model-01

Planed to dedicate herself to the art, the nude photography model never thought she was going to get shooed away by tree branches. On June 9, 2010, at the scenic area of Xinmi, a naked female model posing for nude photography was shooed away by the local villagers.

How Sister Feng became famous

April 24th, 2010 by Key | Posted in Entertainment, Life Style | 14 Comments »

We have talked about this Internet phenomenon in China before – any ordinary person can become famous or infamous over night on the Internet. In Chinese, these people are known as being “red”. We have introduced some of them, like Xili Bro, Candied Haw beauty…  but I decided to review and cover some of them we have missed. Especially Sister Feng (凤姐),  she has become so red hot on the Internet in China recently that truly deserves a post of her own.

20100423-hot-people-06

Her name is Luo Yuefeng (罗玉凤), 1.46 meters tall, very AVERAGE looking with a AVERAGE college degree. But she started to become famous in November 2009 because she was passing out flyers on the streets of Shanghai seeking a boyfriend for marriage, and with outrageously high demands.
