After correctly guessing a found debit card’s PIN number and indulging in a spending spree, a Guangxi man was sentenced to 5 years in prison Xinhua News reported on June 17.

Su Mou apparently found the lost bankcard at a Nanning roadside. The Guangxi man went to a Dongxi City Agricultural Bank of China ATM and, after several failed attempts at guessing the card password, Su finally got it right. He transferred 450,000 yuan to his account in January 2012, and used the funds to book a trip to Vietnam and indulge in a luxurious gambling spree.

Meanwhile, the legitimate cardholders noticed their lack of funds. They contacted authorities, who were able to trace the transactions back to Su. The Guangxi man insisted on paying the victims back the 450,000 yuan he spent, and pleaded guilty to credit card fraud.

The Nanning Qingxiu District People’s Court sentenced him to five years in prison and a 50,000 yuan fine, a relatively light sentence, they said, because Su was so cooperative.
