Jin Ping Mei or The Plum in the Golden Vase (金瓶梅) is sometimes considered to be the fifth classical novel after the Four Great Classical Novels. It is the first full length Chinese fictional work to depict sexuality in a graphically explicit manner. Known for centuries as pornographic material and banned officially most of the time in China, the book is nevertheless surreptitiously read by many of the educated class. The newest film “Jin Ping Mei” featuring Japanese adult film stars will air in Japan in February 2010.

So wait… is this a Chinese production or a Japanese production?
It’s a Japanese production based on a Chinese novel.
To air in Japan in February? I am pretty sure I saw a copy in my local dvdplace. The title “Sex and Chopsticks” made me laugh rather uncontrollably.
According to my information Sex and Chopsticks II (2009) is a sequel.
The original was made in 2008 and produced in Hong Kong.
Ah,, there you go. I should have done my Sex and Chopsticks research before posting.
Love it. Great stuff!

Is this uncensored?
Apparently this version of the forbidden legend has been rated as a “category III” movie. However, while considered graphic by Chinese standards, these films would probably be more on par with movies rated “R” or “NC-17″ in the United States, and not “XXX” (porn).
