  7. Don Hank says:

In a way it is true that other countries help cause pollution in China, but this is mainly because the West refuses to help China avoid this. We hypocritically exempt China from the Kyoto Treaty and in our diplomatic relations with that country, refuse to demand that they clean their environment. Yet, recently, the US, the EU and Mexico lodged a formal complaint before the WTO demanding that China send them more of the raw materials, such as aluminum, coke and fluorspar, that cause this pollution in China !

    • Ziffer says:

Kyoto was all about cutting c02(not a pollutant) emissions wasn’t it? not stopping polluting factories.

    • Leon Ashby says:

The way to improve life on the planet is to assist it to prosper, and for each country to allow its citizens influence its government. The wealthier nations have less pollution because they can afford to clean up the environment & develope new technologies.

Buy chinese goods so they can become wealthier. Help them understand democracy and assist them to work towards it. Co2 is not pollution – its plant food and will make plants grow quicker. Kyoto & Climate change agreements are useless. Climate change is natural and cyclical. Visit China & consume its goods is part of the solution

    • Richard L. says:

You’re crazy. China REFUSES to change. Communist countries ALWAYS pollute to the max. They don’t give a damn about the peasants, just the money! Ignoramous, don’t you remember the vast pollution discovered in Poland, Romania, East Germany and the Soviet Union on the collapse of the Soviet Empire?

      What a clown you are.

  13. Martin Dietz says:

The pictures are dokumentation on at chinese industrial “development” which not is based on traditional chinese thinking ” I Ching ” book of changes, Kungfutse and Tao.
China has not learned from the capitalistic western countries bad experiences from appriximately 1850 to 1945.
Therefore we need a green economy and produktion with co2 netral emission and no polition, based on solar, wind and sea erngy etc. not on coal, oil and gas.
We all have to take care of the planet. Mother earth.

  14. Marcelo says:

The same thing happened in the USSR under socialism. It is greed, which is a human trait.

    • Melissa says:

    • Rich says:

Capitalism is by definition economic freedom under the impartial application of universal law. China does not have it.

    • Isukusa says:

This is what happens to human beings when they are owned by the state. Get ready America…Model of Capitalism? What a idiot! The citizens of the US have judicial recourse, they can sue industries and governments that do these things to the environment and to people. These poor souls do not have that option under communism. I would challenge anyone to compare the environments of western nations to that of China, the old Soviet Union, North Korea and any other communist country and compare the differences, the results are obvious.

  15. Dina says:

This is totally apalling! The Chinese government is pathetic, to allow such gross violation of human rights.

A large number of companies must have international investors which would never dream of doing such atroceties in their countries.

Absolutely shameful what is happening to the people and the environment.

The Chinese government is outrageous, and a joke to the rest of the world.

  16. Mrartchell says:

Simply impose a 50% tax on all Chinese products untill the Chinese government respects
    environmental standards.

  22. Alex says:

Yep! And the English are sending their rubbish to China because they issued laws which prohibit to burn it in England not to pollute the air! This is not only sick but hypocritical as hell!!! Responsibility begins at home!!! So let´s not judge the Chinese, let´s help them and ourselves! The 1st step is to consume less and press the producers not to create a lot of packaging!

    • bildo says:

You consume less Alex. Not me.
I am all about consumption to the max. Emissions reduction, responsible employers, and health care provision are a responsibility of the Chinese government and the businesses they support via taxes. Mao would have made short work of these folks. Simply turn them into fertilizer. Our & their corrupt practices of waste(including gas steams) mangement are to blame. Not consumption. That is a privilage. So you go eat rice my friend. Reduce responsibly and pray for war. R/bildousa

Fuckin government. If the people of China can’t do anything to defend themselves for the government then someone has to help them not through war but through a boycott of the services China sells that cause all that pollution. Only the invisible hand of economics can decide what stays and what goes and we the people have the power to influence that invisible hand not the government.

    • gavcom says:

The only way to make a statement is to stop buying Chinese made product, even though a lot of items are made in China. There are products that are locally made no matter where you are in the world, we just have to find it. I have an office chair factory in Canada and I purchase everything in Canada that I can. My competitors spend most of their money in China, which isn’t as good quality wise, but the costs are incredibly less!

      • jay says:

yeah with a capitalist economy you retard

        • Steve says:

Capitalist economies are concerned about the efficiency of their production methods. While China may have embraced SOME of the concepts of capitalism, this kind of waste and destruction of the environment is a result of the mindlessness of communist insistence on quotas.

          • Shaw says:

That is a retarded statement. Quotas?
Most of those Polluted business who are so greedy
to make profits and they bribe the local officials so
they can break the environmental lawas and still
            make huge PROFITS.

Learn some history. there was NO industrial pollution
when China was communist. The pollution didn’t come
until China adopt market economy and foreign investment!

            • Steve says:

Learn some history yourself. When did China give up communism? They only adopted some capialist models when Hong Kong reverted bck to mainland Chinese control.

        • The Redneck says:

China’s economy is run by their government. No matter how many mental gymnastics you perform, it is not a capitalist economy–it’s the same communist dictatorship that slaughtered 64 million of its own civilians in the Great Leap Forward.

          Retard.

Anithing is permited for the progress of a few… gush this is horrible, worst then dantestic.
I knew that China had very serious pollution problems but this pictures have left me stoned and hardly without words.
I can’t figure what should be the real difference between a genocide and the people who tolerates, supports and finances those industries, even part of the foult should fall over us, that we buy consumer goods like nuts without even thinking about the consequences it has som thousand miles from our home. This is as bad as what we have seen in Rwanda, Congo, and many parts of the world, probably even worst because no one will ever know how many people will die thanks to the long exposure to these polluted areas. A death that takes years to take place, that destroys animal and human flesh from the inside out, And wat’s worst, this genocide my last for generations since pollution penetrates the soil, the see’s, the air, and all the living beings, lasting there for centuries.

As a fellow photographer I have to say that the pictures are magnificent and hope that they will serve for giving some conciousness to this blind world.

    Best regards,

    Mikel

Blame it on the rich and powerful, colonialism and exploitation… and now the forces of globalisation and consumerism. Realities ( of communism) have shown us that equality and shared poverty doesn’t help, neither the ‘borrowed & unreal’ power of the “You’re either with us or against us” doctrine. Human nature as it has always been, born good but selfish and some bad, will continue being so. When long suppressed/deprived nations find themselves able to rise to claim their share hitherto enjoyed only by the mighty and rich, it’s not easy to do so in a way that satifies all. Can someone truly point to a better way for China? It must be right, in China, to “let some get rich first”. I expect China will also contribute more, relatively, than the developed West, towards the cause of the Copenhagen Summit. Thanks to the timely photos. But don’t take China as they represent. Doing so would not be fair.

  76. j.a.n. says:

it’s funny to read all the hypocritical comments from the Americans here. Especially since most of the goods from China end up in the US. So demanding the cheapest goods for purchase in Walmart (the seventh largest trading entity for China, ahead of many nations on this planet) the US is directly linked to this mess. It’s like US slavery. The idea that “I didn’t know” the goods were made by slaves doesn’t cut it.

Additionally the hypocrisy of the US on pollution is documented. They are a non signatory to the Kyoto Agreement.

(Australia ratified the Kyoto Protocol on 3 December 2007, which came into effect at the end of March 2008. The most notable non-party to the (Kyoto) Protocol is the United States, which is a party to UNFCCC and was responsible for 36.1% of the 1990 emission levels of Annex I countries.)

If the US can’t sign Kyoto, what about the contamination from copper mines in Montana or the endless fires and acidification of rivers by coal mines in PA or Appalacia? Three Mile Island nuclear disaster and contamination.. the list goes on. Ignorant country.

    • Steve says:

It’s not just Walmart… Have a look at the labels on the things you buy… A few years ago, I attempted a personal boycott of all Chinese goods. I found it to be an extremely expensive venture, and I learned a lot about just how much stuff we get from China.

      • Daniel says:

And it’s not just US. The whole developed world, including Europe, has big responsibilities. It seems those who have the power don’t have sons, or they simply don’t care about this disaster.
Nevertheless if they will not manage to agree on a strong new protocol then they will have to live in the same polluted world we all live.

    • The Redneck says:

We are a non-signatory to the Kyoto Agreement because the Kyoto Agreement is absolute crap that will do no good and plenty of harm.

–what about the contamination from copper mines in Montana or the endless fires and acidification of rivers by coal mines in PA or Appalacia? Three Mile Island nuclear disaster and contamination.. the list goes on.–
And, like the items you quoted, most of the items in this list are completely fictional. If you’re actually trying to equate the USA’s environmental record with that of communist China, your hatred has fully replaced any capacity for reason you might have had.

    • Ebony says:

Good constructive comments Jan, Steve and Daniel. No comment “The Redneck”.
The western world is the demand that keeps this overwhelming situation occurring and increasing.
To try and put it simply, if we are the demand, then we can demand better conditions if we are committed to what “sacrifices” that journey entails. Personally, i don’t see modifying how we live as a sacrifice, i see it as being aware/mindful/responsible for how we live (which makes me happy) but unfortunately a lot of people will and do see it as an unfair sacrifice.

It’s time the success of a civilisation was measured not by economic growth, but how they balance the economy, the environment and the social community.

  86. Andrew says:

I truly is complete and utter insanity the way we treat our world and those who inhabit it. We desperately need to move towards alternative, cleaner forms of energy production and spend appropriate funds on ‘best-practice’ disposal – that which minimises at all costs environmental harm. It’s obscene that this pollution is not dealt with in better ways because it reduces bottom-line profit. It’s a world which – at present and at this rate – is due to die – it’s completely unsustainable. If one believes in Mother Earth – ‘Gaia’ – as an entity – she’s sick from a cancer such as many of those unfortunate souls in these photos – although not just in China – but all around the world.
