[Netease] “Not going outside wearing pajamas”. This is Shanghai city government’s request for the residents of the city prior to the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. However this provoked widespread controversy. On one hand, wearing pajamas does not conform to international etiquette, but there are voices also advocating that if the government makes a rule restricting wearing pajamas, then society loses some of its freedom.

On 25th of October during the warm-up before the game, a man did just that, bear hugged Liu Xiang from behind. Liu Xiang was not happy and pushed him away. Because Haigui (海归) has the same pronunciation as “sea turtle” (海龟), therefore the use of “sea turtle” also referred to this group of people.

A video about schoolgirls in Shanghai fighting appeared on well-known forum called KDS on the evening of October 23rd. The video is 5 minutes and 20 seconds in length. In an alley, a middle school schoolgirl wearing a purple T-shirt beat up another schoolgirl while many bystanders stood by, speaking in Shanghainese, and they continuously called the girl instigating and bullying “Sister Xiong” “Xiong Jie” (熊姐).

Tanghulu (冰糖葫芦): A snack food popular in Northern China that is made from sugar coated hawthorns, yam or other fruit skewered on a bamboo stick; similar to candied apples, also 糖葫芦.

Xi Shi (西施) was one of the renowned Four Beauties of ancient China. She was said to have lived near the end of the Spring and Autumn Period in Zuni, the capital of the ancient state of Yue.

Xi Shi’s beauty was said to be so extreme that while leaning over a balcony to look at the fish in the pond, the fish were so dazzled that they forgot to swim and gradually sunk to the bottom of the pond, birds would forget to fly and fall from the sky, the moon would fade from embarrassment, and flowers would close their petals in shame of being compared to her.

Xi Shi is now a term used to describe beautiful women.

A blog supposedly written by a HIV-infected prostitute named Yan Deli (闫德利) exposing 279 of her “sex contacts” swept the internet and was heavily covered by the Chinese internet media. Later there were also reports on “the reason she did this was to find her fiancé”. However it turned out, all of it was just a hoax. The police have already been involved. They suspected Yan Deli’s ex-boyfriend was behind the incident.

Wal-Mart: Violence and Lies

The night of September 2nd, Yu Xiaochun (余小春) who was viciously beaten by Wal-Mart workers, passed away after three days of rescuing efforts by the doctors. Since the exposure of the incident, Wal-Mart murder case was the hot topic of the internet forums.

On August 30th 7 pm, 37-year-old Yu Xiaochun went to Wal-Mart supercenter in Jingdezhen plaza. When she walked out of the store, five Wal-Mart employees (four men and one woman) chased up to her. They accused Yu of stealing and demanded her to show receipt. Because those guys were not wearing Wal-Mart uniforms, Yu snatched the receipt back. As a result, five employees beat her up senselessly to the ground. They would not even stop went Yu’s family was kneeling at the scene begging. Eventually the police showed up and rushed her to the hospital. But Yu still passed away 3 days later.
