China Daily Net Global Online News: Chinese President Jintao HU（胡锦涛）and U.S. President Barack Obama met for the first time face-to-face in London on April. 1st. The leaders exchanged views on the issues concerning Sino-US relations, international financial crisis and other international and regional matters of common concern between two countries. Barack Obama has already accepted the invitation made by Jintao HU, and he will visit China in second half of this year.
China News Net, London, on April 1st, Reports (Reporter Shuo ZHANG / 张朔, Peng LI / 李鹏) Chinese president Jintao HU met with U. S. new president Barack Obama in London in the afternoon of April 1st local time. President Jintao HU says China is willing to work with the US to make greater progress in advancing bilateral relations, and he hopes to establish a good working relationship and personal friendship with Obama.
Before the official close-door meeting, Jintao HU and Barack Obama together met the reporters first and made a brief speech.
Obama says I would like to take this opportunity to welcome President HU and appreciate him for being here in person so that we can talk with each other face-to face.
Obama says China is a big country with its long and unique history. US-SINO relations have become extremely constructive and our economic relations become very steady. I have talked publicly, and continue to believe that US-SINO relations are not only important for citizens in both countries but also important to other countries on a number of issues.
Obama says, thus, I look forward to a very productive and open conversation, not only about the whole state of the world economy during the current crisis, but also about how to work together to improve peace and security for both countries and the whole world. I firmly believe that SINO-US relations are very strong at the moment, and we will make it stronger in the future.
Jintao HU indicated then that he was pleased to meet Obama, and it was their first face-to-face meeting. Sino-US relations have made a good start since Obama took office. President Obama and I have kept the close communication, and two foreign ministers have also exchanged visits in a short period of time. The two sides have reached consensus on the orientation of China-US relations in the new era and on the establishment of a “China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogues”. “These results do not come easily, they are worth cherishing for.”
Jintao HU says, as Obama just noticed that, a good relations with the U.S. is not only in the interests of the two peoples, but also beneficial to peace, stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region, and the world at large. China is willing to work with the U.S. to make even greater progress in advancing the bilateral relations.
Jintao HU said, “I’m also willing to establish a good working relationship and personal friendship with Obama. I believe that the meeting will be positive and constructive.”
Afterwards, Chinese vice-premier Wang Qishan（王岐山）, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other representatives who took part in the strategic and economic dialogue between two countries took photo with the two leaders. Obama said that they will start the conversation with constructive spirit.
The meeting was taken place in Winfield Manor Hall at the British Embassy Residence, and was scheduled for one hour.
